BLOGGED: Style Inspired By 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'

I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I hadn't watched Gentlemen Prefer Blondes until two weeks ago. Of course I was aware of the pop culture references from this iconic film starring Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe, like Madonna's pink gown sequence in the "Material Girl" video. But I wasn't aware of the sartorial feast that is Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. As Lorelei Lee (Monroe) and Dorothy Shaw (Russell) try to outsmart a private detective hired by Lorelei's disapproving future father-in-law, they strut, dance, flirt, and use their wits while wearing the height of 1950s fashion. And what do you know? This season many of the same trends, like houndstooth, women's suiting, and feminine tailoring, are at the forefront of fashion just like they were in the '50s.

Keep clicking for a few of today's looks that Lorelei and Dorothy could have totally rocked in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
